With the seat selection process kicking off for professional courses, Karnataka Examination Authority(KEA) has put up the cut off ranks for medical and engineering seats in the past four years.
The cut offs for Bangalore Medical College (BMC), the most sought after college in the state was 204 (general merit) last year. This was after the intake was increased. Prior to that, the cut offs were much below the top 100. In 2008, it was 89, in 2009 it was rose upto 97 and in 2010 it was 86. With around 150 more seats expected to be sanctioned this year, the cut off ranks will rise. As for the engineering seats, RVCE ( R V College of Engineering) remained the most favourite among the aspirants over the years. The cut off for electronics and computer science here were 396 and 408 respectively. It was as low as 78 and 470 in 2008. The ranks were 163/581, 127/350 for these two courses in the subsequent years.
The list of cut off ranks will give students an idea as to which colleges they can look forward to while applying this year.

(x) Original fee payment receipt i.e CBS challan/ NEFT Receipt/ e-receipt will have to be
submitted with the Call Letter at the time of Group Discussion/ Interview. Without original
CBS challan/ NEFT receipt/ e-receipt the candidate will not be allowed to appear in the
Interview. Candidates are also advised to keep a photocopy of the fee payment challan with them.
(xi) The name of the candidate or his/her father/husband etc. should be spelt correctly in the
application as it appears in the certificates/marksheets. Any change / alteration found may
disqualify the candidature.
(xii) CANDIDATES SHOULD NOT SUBMIT A PRINTOUT OF THE APPLICATION / FEE

The Medical Council of India has rejected the approval for Christian Medical College, Dichpalli, Nizamabad, and Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada. With this, students will lose about 150 MBBS seats in the new academic year 2012-13. While Christian Medical College had sent proposals for 100 MBBS seats, the Rangaraya College had proposed to increase its quota from 100 to 150 seats. Both the proposals were rejected by the MCI.
CMC has been trying to secure MCI approval since 2007 in vain. The MCI teams inspecting the college have expressed dissatisfaction over the existing infrastructure and faculty and refused to give approval.However, both colleges are optimistic about securing the approval, as the MCI has asked them to attend a personal hearing before its Board of Governors (BoG) on June 1.
The colleges are expected to give an undertaking on meeting the MCI norms within the stipulated time-frame and request for “conditional approval“.At present, there is an acute shortage of MBBS seats in the state.Only 4,500 MBBS seats are available in 14 government and 23 private medical colleges in the state, while over 70,000 students qualify in the Eamcet medical entrance tests every year and vie for MBBS seats.

Putting the 4.5% minority sub-quota on hold till legal challenges are resolved, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on Thursday sought to allay students' apprehensions and advised them to expand their choice of courses.
The statement came on the back of the Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment scrapping the sub-quota, putting in quandary the over 300 IIT aspirants who had been shortlisted under the provision. The urgency in the case is because counseling for students is already underway.
IIT-JEE organizing chairman Prof G B Reddy said, "The students should expand their choices to take care of both eventualities (if the HC decision is upheld or stayed by the Supreme Court).'' While law minister Salman Khurshid has categorically said that the government would approach the SC to challenge the HC order, it remains to be seen whether it will be able to get a stay. In the wake of the court order, IITs have decided to abide by the ruling, "ignoring" the quota provision till further legal developments. The statement said "the judgment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court will be implemented by ignoring the provision for reservation of 4.5% seats and by converting seats meant for OBC (non-creamy layer)-minority community to OBC (non-creamy layer) category".
With this, about 325 candidates who had been shortlisted under the sub-quota for counseling may have to compete with the 27% OBC non-creamy layer quota. This means that aspirants who were assured of the course of their choice will now have to keep their options open. The statement also said that "all the shortlisted candidates are advised to note that availability of 4.5% reservation for OBC (non creamy layer-minority) shall depend on the legal developments till June 13 and hence they may register the choice of courses accordingly."IIT
Counselling for admission to 15 IITs and IT-BHU and ISM-Dhanbad is currently underway and the process will go on till June 10. The web release of the first seat allotment will be made on June 14. The IITs are the first to implement the government's decision.
