The Medical Council of India has rejected the approval for Christian Medical College, Dichpalli, Nizamabad, and Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada. With this, students will lose about 150 MBBS seats in the new academic year 2012-13. While Christian Medical College had sent proposals for 100 MBBS seats, the Rangaraya College had proposed to increase its quota from 100 to 150 seats. Both the proposals were rejected by the MCI.
CMC has been trying to secure MCI approval since 2007 in vain. The MCI teams inspecting the college have expressed dissatisfaction over the existing infrastructure and faculty and refused to give approval. However, both colleges are optimistic about securing the approval, as the MCI has asked them to attend a personal hearing before its Board of Governors (BoG) on June 1.
The colleges are expected to give an undertaking on meeting the MCI norms within the stipulated time-frame and request for “conditional approval“.At present, there is an acute shortage of MBBS seats in the state.Only 4,500 MBBS seats are available in 14 government and 23 private medical colleges in the state, while over 70,000 students qualify in the Eamcet medical entrance tests every year and vie for MBBS seats.
